Do you ever feel like your brain is stuck in a loop? Maybe it’s the racing thoughts that keep you up at night, the “brain fog” that makes focusing on work impossible, or a constant hum of background anxiety that you just can’t shake. We often blame ourselves for these struggles, thinking we just need to try harder or “snap out of it.” But here at True North Chiropractic, we know that these aren’t character flaws—they are often signs of a dysregulated nervous system.

Your brain is the command center of your entire body. When it’s stuck in survival mode (fight, flight, or freeze), true healing and relaxation become nearly impossible. That’s where neurofeedback comes in. Think of it not as a medical treatment, but as a personal trainer for your brain.

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback (also known as EEG biofeedback) is a non-invasive, drug-free way to measure and train your brainwave patterns. Just like you hit the gym to strengthen your muscles, neurofeedback exercises your brain’s neural pathways to improve flexibility and stability.

Your brain communicates through electrical impulses called brainwaves. When these waves are moving too fast, you might feel anxious or scattered. When they are too slow, you might struggle with depression, lack of motivation, or difficulty focusing. Neurofeedback helps your brain identify these irregularities and gently guides it back to a balanced, optimal state.

How It Works: The “Mirror” Effect

The process is surprisingly simple yet profound. We use advanced technology to hold up a “mirror” to your brain activity.

During a session, sensors placed on your scalp monitor your brainwaves in real-time. All you have to do is sit comfortably and watch a movie or show. When your brain produces healthy, balanced brainwave patterns, the screen brightens—this is the “reward.” If your brain slips into old, dysregulated patterns (like distraction or stress), the screen dims.

This process is called operant conditioning. Your brain naturally wants the reward (the clear picture and sound), so it subconsciously learns to self-correct. Over time, these fleeting moments of balance become your new normal.

The Benefits: Clarity, Focus, and Resilience

The goal of neurofeedback isn’t to change who you are; it’s to help you become the most resilient version of yourself. Clients who undergo brainwave training often report:

  • Mental Clarity: The “fog” lifts, making decision-making and critical thinking easier.
  • Improved Focus: Whether it’s for a child struggling in school or an adult managing a complex career, neurofeedback strengthens the ability to stay on task.
  • Stress Resilience: Instead of spiraling when challenges arise, your nervous system learns to bounce back quickly, maintaining a sense of safety and calm.

What to Expect From Your First Session

If you’re new to neurofeedback, you might be wondering what that first appointment looks like. We pride ourselves on creating a safe, welcoming environment—there are no needles, no shocks, and no pain involved.

Your journey typically begins with a Brain Map (qEEG). This is a comprehensive analysis where we place specialized diodes on your head to record your brain’s electrical activity. This map allows us to see exactly where your brain is over-firing or under-performing.

Once we have your map, we sit down with you to explain the data and create a customized training plan. During your first actual training session, you’ll:

  1. Get Comfortable: You’ll settle into a comfortable chair in our relaxing clinic space.
  2. Hook Up: Our technician, Cindy, or a team member will place small sensors on your scalp. This takes just a few seconds and is completely painless.
  3. Tune In: You’ll put on headphones and watch a screen. All you have to do is relax and pay attention. Your brain does the heavy lifting for you!
  4. Feel the Shift: Most appointments take 30–45 minutes, with the session itself around 30 minutes. While you might not feel a huge change immediately, many clients report a sense of calm or “lightness” right after leaving the office.

Ready to Reset?

Healing begins when your nervous system feels safe. If you are ready to move from surviving to thriving, neurofeedback might be the missing piece of your wellness puzzle.
