If you’ve never visited a chiropractor, your perception of the profession might be shaped by wild adjustment videos or outdated misconceptions. While chiropractic care has become a mainstream pillar of wellness, several persistent myths about chiropractic care still cause people to hesitate, even when they are in desperate need of relief.
Our belief is that informed patients make the best health decisions. To help you navigate your journey to wellness, we’re clearing the air and debunking the top five most common myths about chiropractic care.
Myth #1: “Chiropractors Aren’t ‘Real’ Doctors.”
This is perhaps one of the most enduring myths about chiropractic care. In reality, the educational requirements for a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) are among the most stringent of any health profession.
Chiropractic students must complete four years of professional study after their undergraduate degree. Their curriculum involves roughly 4,500 hours of classroom, laboratory, and clinical internship. Interestingly, chiropractic students actually clock more hours in anatomy, physiology, and ultrasound/diagnostic imaging than their counterparts in medical school. While we don’t prescribe drugs or perform surgery, we are highly trained medical service providers.
Myth #2: “The ‘Pop’ is Your Bones Cracking Together.”
The sound often associated with a chiropractic adjustment is called a cavitation. Contrary to popular belief, it isn’t the sound of bones grinding or snapping.
Inside the capsules surrounding your joints is a lubricating fluid called synovial fluid. This fluid contains dissolved gases like oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. When a chiropractor performs a quick, targeted adjustment, it creates a sudden change in pressure within the joint. This causes those gases to release rapidly, forming a bubble—much like the “pop” you hear when opening a bottle of champagne. The sound is simply a gas release, not a structural fracture.
Myth #3: “Once You Start Going, You Have to Go Forever.”
Couldn’t the same thing be said about eating or drinking?
Jokes aside, when you consider that our services involve far more than just adjustments, it makes perfect sense that many patients would choose to have True North as a permanent part of their wellness plan. It’s not that they have to keep coming to us forever, it’s that they feel better and have better outcomes when they allow us to participate in their health journey.
That said, many of our patients come in with a specific need or issue that can take a certain number of visits to resolve, and then we may not see them again for a while until they run into a new issue. Then, because they trust us and know that our treatments are effective, they come back throughout their lives as needed.
Myth #4: “Adjustments Are Dangerous and Painful.”
This is one of the easiest myths about chiropractic care to debunk. Safety is a top priority in any medical field, and chiropractic care is remarkably safe. Statistically, chiropractic treatments are far less invasive and carry significantly fewer risks than long-term use of over-the-counter NSAIDs (like ibuprofen) or prescription painkillers.
As for the “pain” factor, most patients describe the sensation of an adjustment as a massive sense of relief. While some minor soreness might occur—similar to the feeling after a good workout—the vast majority of people walk out of the office feeling lighter and more mobile than when they walked in.
Myth #5: “Chiropractic is Only for Back Pain.”
While we are certainly experts at resolving back and neck pain, the scope of chiropractic care is much broader. Your spine houses your spinal cord, which is the “information highway” of your entire body. Every organ, muscle, and tissue in your body receives its instructions from the brain through the nerves that exit the spine.
We employ several different modalities to help our patients find relief from a wide variety of ailments, including migraines, knee pain, injury recovery from automotive accidents, and complications from surgery. The stereotypical “snap, crackle, pop” is only one of the arrows in our proverbial quiver.
